Not-So-Brief Summary: In 2009 I opened a small coffee and record shop in Seattle called Porchlight. Having almost no budget, I wound up designing and branding most of the shop myself: stamps, cold brew labels, event posters, shirts, and a bunch of menus and announcements in between. In the early days of the shop, I was also working behind the counter seven days a week. I'm still behind the counter just not quite as often.My start in design was one of necessity. Before Porchlight, I spent a lot of time playing in bands. Between touring, playing tiny shows in basements and DIY spaces, I started designing show posters and shirts. Luckily, most of those designs are hard to find these days. A few years into Porchlight, folks started asking me to design for their bands, businesses, and projects.I love working with businesses big and little, but small ones hold a special place in my heart. I take pride in being able to use my experience as a shop owner to provide design and merchandising guidance while understanding the hurdles that so many small businesses face.
